Rival Parties Split over Possible Joint March under Unification Flag

Rival political parties have clashed again over the government’s proposal to have South and North Korea march together during the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics under a unified Korean Peninsula flag.

During a special parliamentary committee meeting on the PyeongChang Games on Monday, the ruling Democratic Party welcomed the plan, saying it could help create momentum to bring permanent peace to the Korean Peninsula.

DP Representative Min Hong-chul said the two Koreas already marched together under the unification flag nine previous times, and added that as a symbolic act it could help draw global attention to the PyeongChang Games.

On the other hand, the largest opposition Liberty Korea Party(LKP) urged the government not to use the flag for political purposes.

LKP Representative Lee Chul-gyu said the government should not move ahead with the plan unilaterally against what he claimed was the public's will. He pointed out that there was no other global sporting event in history in which the host country marched under a flag that was not its own.
