N. Korean Orchestra to Perform Folk Songs, Universal Tunes

A North Korean orchestra will perform well-known Korean folk songs and universal tunes at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics next month.

South Korea's chief delegate Lee Woo-sung said in a news briefing on Monday after working-level inter-Korean talks that the North said its programs will be comprised of folk songs and masterpieces that fit the theme of unification and are well known to both South and North Koreans.

The head of the culture and arts policy office at the Culture Ministry said that South Korea also conveyed its position that folk songs, art songs or classical music would be desirable.

Lee said that joint performances by the two Koreas were not discussed during the working-level talks. He added that the North did not mention who the Samjiyon Orchestra is composed of or whether Moranbong Band members will be included.

North Korea agreed Monday to send a 140-member orchestra to South Korea during the Winter Olympics and hold concerts in Seoul and Gangneung.
