Foreign Ministry Keeping Close eye Amid Report of N. Korea Testing Reactor

The Foreign Ministry says it is closely observing related trends regarding a foreign media report that North Korea appears to be testing an experimental light water nuclear reactor at its Yongbyon test site ahead of its summit with the United States.
Ministry spokesman Noh Kyu-duk revealed such stance during a news briefing on Thursday.
Noh said the government will exert active efforts for a milestone to be created for denuclearization and the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula through successful summits between the two Koreas and between North Korea and the U.S.
His comments came after a report by Jane's Intelligence Review which suggested that the reclusive regime appears to have initiated testing a reactor capable of producing plutonium and tritium at its Yongbyon nuclear complex.
When asked about what North Korean leader Kim Jong-un could have meant when he said the issue of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula can be resolved if Seoul and Washington take simultaneous and step-by-step measures to realize peace, Noh said there needs to be more analysis.
The spokesman said it was meaningful that Kim conveyed his commitment to denuclearization as well as willingness to hold talks with South Korea and the United States when he held a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping and when he met with President Moon Jae-in's special envoys.
