Tokyo Gives Respect to Seoul over Inter-Korean Summit

Japan has expressed respect for South Korea's efforts to secure a rare summit with North Korea's reclusive regime.

During a regular media briefing on Thursday, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga relayed Tokyo’s stance when asked about an agreement made earlier in the day between the two Koreas to hold a bilateral summit on April 27th.

Suga said Japan respects South Korea for actively working to arrange the summit and leading the North to take specific actions for it to happen.

He said Japan will also work continuously to draw specific actions from the North regarding denuclearization through the planned inter-Korean summit and the U.S.-North Korea summit.

To that end, Suga explained Japan will closely coordinate with South Korea and the U.S. by seizing every chance it gets, including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s upcoming visit to Washington, next month.
