K-Pop Singers, Taekwondo Team Leave for N. Korea

Anchor: Some of South Korea's best-known musicians flew to Pyongyang on Saturday where they will stage two concerts in the coming days. It comes amid a thaw in inter-Korean exchanges created by the PyeongChang Olympics, and will be the first performance by South Korean artists in Pyongyang in 13 years since veteran singer Cho Yong-pil put on a show in 2005.
Kim In-kyung has this report.

Report: Bold-name K-pop singers and taekwondo athletes headed to North Korea on Saturday to hold performances in Pyongyang ahead of an inter-Korean summit scheduled at the end of April.

The 120-member group led by Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Do Jong-whan left for Pyongyang from Gimpo International Airport on a specially arranged chartered flight.

The contingent includes legendary singers Cho Yong-pil and Lee Sun-hee, the girl group Red Velvet and the rocker Yoon Do-hyun as well as taekwondo demonstrators, journalists, staff members and a government support team.

"It is our great honor to perform with veteran singers. As we're the youngest singers, we'll do our best to deliver bright energy to North Korean people. Thank you."

The musicians will put on a two-hour concert at the East Pyongyang Grand Theater on Sunday. A joint performance with North Korea is scheduled for Tuesday at the Ryugyong Jong Ju Yong Gymnasium.

Seohyun, a member of the girl group Girls' Generation who made a surprise appearance to perform alongside a North Korean art troupe in Seoul last month, plans to emcee the events.

Around 70 technicians and engineers are already in Pyongyang, arriving on Thursday as an advance team to install equipment at the concert venues.

The South Korean taekwondo team will hold an hour-long performance at the Pyongyang Taekwondo Hall on Sunday, followed by a joint performance with North Korea at the Pyongyang Grand Theatre on Monday.

The art troupe and taekwondo athletes will return home late Tuesday.
