Abe: Summits with N. Korea Pointless If They are Held for Sake of Talks

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says South Korea and the United States' upcoming summits with North Korea will be pointless if they are held just for the sake of talks.

Abe made the remark during a meeting of the House of Councilors on Monday.

He said past inter-Korean summits held during the administrations of Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun did not lead to denuclearization but rather advanced the North's nuclear and missile capabilities.

The Japanese leader's remarks come as Seoul, Washington and Beijing are seeking to resolve the North's nuclear and missile issue through talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

When asked by lawmaker Kusuo Oshima on some observers saying Japan has been left out from regional talks on North Korea, Abe said such speculations are wrong.
