The director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency(CIA) met with Kim Jong-un over the Easter weekend. 

The Washington Post reported Tuesday that Mike Pompeo made a secret visit to North Korea as an envoy for U.S. President Donald Trump, citing two people with direct knowledge of the trip.

The two people told the paper that the visit was part of efforts to lay groundwork for talks between Trump and the North Korean leader. 

The previously unreported trip came after Pompeo was nominated to replace Rex Tillerson as secretary of state. 

According to the report, the CIA, the White House and the North Korean government all declined to comment. 

The meeting between Pompeo and Kim marks the highest-level meeting between the U.S. and North Korea since 2000.
