Kyodo: S. Korea, US, Japan Mulling Plan to Denuclearize N. Korea by Summer of 2020

Japan’s Kyodo News says Seoul, Washington and Tokyo are mulling a plan to complete the denuclearization of North Korea by the summer of 2020.

Quoting a number of diplomatic sources in Washington and Tokyo on Wednesday, the report said the three countries are considering such a plan with the intention of achieving the North’s denuclearization in a short period of time.

One diplomatic source told Kyodo that the U.S. has explained to Japan that it is considering a one-shot deal which would include Pyongyang’s complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization and security guarantees for the North. The source said the goal of summer 2020 was mentioned.

The report said that such a package deal is likely to be discussed as the leaders of the U.S. and Japan are set to review a road map for the North’s denuclearization during their summit slated for Tuesday and Wednesday.
