2nd Round of Working-Level Talks for Inter-Korean Summit Ends

The two Koreas have wrapped up the second round of working-level talks aimed at discussing preparations for the upcoming inter-Korean summit, including protocol and security issues.

An official of the South Korean presidential office said in a text message sent to reporters on Wednesday that the talks began at 10 a.m. at the truce village of Panmunjeom and went on without a lunch break before ending at around 3:15 p.m.

Although details of the discussions have yet to be announced, the two sides are expected to have had a wide range of discussions on topics, including protocol, security and press coverage for the April 27th summit.

The two sides are likely to have discussed the detailed route for North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s trip to the summit’s venue, the Peace House on the southern side of Panmunjeom, as well as how and when President Moon Jae-in and Kim will meet.

The time of the summit, whether the two leaders will hold a luncheon or dinner, whether they will hold a joint news conference and whether the first ladies will accompany them during the events were also likely discussed, as well as respective security measures.

Regarding press coverage, discussions are believed to have focused on the size of the accredited press corps for the summit, whether to allow live broadcasting of the event, and whether the press center within Panmunjeom will be used jointly by the two Koreas.

The South Korean delegation was led by deputy director of the National Intelligence Service Kim Sang-gyun and included Cho Han-ki, a presidential secretary on protocol, Kwun Hyuk-ki, the head of the presidential press center, Yun Kun-young, director of the top office’s situation room, and Shin Yong-wook, a senior presidential security officer.

The members of the North Korean delegation were not disclosed.
