WSJ: Trump to Ask N. Korea to Dismantle Nuclear Program Before Sanctions Relief

U.S. President Donald Trump will ask North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to quickly dismantle the country's nuclear arsenal when they meet, without granting significant sanctions relief in return for freezing nuclear and missile tests, according to the Wall Street Journal on Sunday.
A senior Trump administration official told the newspaper that when the U.S. president says he won't repeat the mistakes of the past, he means he won't make major concessions such as lifting sanctions, until the North substantially dismantles its nuclear program.
On the other hand, the official said the rewards will be limitless if the North acts quickly to denuclearize.
As a result, the paper said that the speed of the North's nuclear dismantlement and a timetable for easing sanctions will be the two key issues during the U.S.-North summit, which is expected to be held in late May or early June.
During his recent visit to Beijing, Kim had proposed a "phased and simultaneous" method to get rewards each step of the way. However, the Wall Street Journal said that the Trump administration prefers a so-called "big bang" approach, in which both sides would make major concessions early on.
