Foreign Minister: Denuclearization Prerequisite for Peace on Peninsula

Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha says resolving North Korea's nuclear program is a prerequisite to securing peace on the Korean Peninsula and will be a key topic of discussion at the upcoming inter-Korean and North-U.S. summits.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Korea Peace Foundation on Wednesday, Kang said Seoul is focusing all diplomatic efforts on inducing Pyongyang to make the strategic decision of abandoning its nuclear weapons.
She said there is skepticism regarding the North's willingness for denuclearization, but that the government will seek creative ways to fill the gap in thoughts between the North and the U.S. as the North has made it official that it would halt additional nuclear and missile tests.
The foreign minister said the inter-Korean summit set for Friday will be meaningful in that it will act as a stepping stone for the North-U.S. summit, which could lead to a South-North-U.S. summit.
