US Senate Passes N. Korean Human Rights Reauthorization Act

The U.S. Senate has passed a bill to extend the existing North Korean Human Rights Act to 2022 ahead of the inter-Korean and U.S.-North Korea summits.

According to an official at the U.S. Congress on Wednesday, the Senate unanimously approved the bill without voting in a plenary session on Tuesday.

The North Korean Human Rights Reauthorization Act of 2017, proposed by Republican Senator Marco Rubio, is aimed at promoting human rights, democracy, and freedom of information in North Korea by utilizing modern technology, such as mobiles phones, micro SD cards, and audio and video players.

The act says that it is the sense of Congress that the U.S. government should continue to make it a priority to improve information access in North Korea by exploring the use of new and emerging technologies and expanding nongovernmental radio broadcasting to North Korea, including news and information.
