Report: Presidential Chief of Staff Im Jong-seok announced that the leaders of the two Koreas will hold their first historic encounter at the border village of Panmunjeom at 9:30 a.m. Friday before holding two rounds of summits.
Im, who heads the preparatory committee for the summit, said in a news briefing that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will cross the Military Demarcation Line to the South where he will be greeted by President Moon Jae-in.
From there, the two leaders will walk to the site of the welcoming ceremony where Kim will become the first North Korean leader to receive a South Korean military guard of honor.
The summit will begin at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of the Peace House building. Kim will be accompanied by his younger sister Yo-jong and eight others while Moon will be joined by seven officials.
A second summit will be held in the afternoon, after which the two leaders will sign and unveil a joint statement.
On the summit’s agenda, Im stressed that the main focus will be the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and establishing permanent peace. He said, however, that it is difficult to predict to what extent the two sides will be able to reach an agreement over denuclearization.
He said that the summit would be a great success if it specifies the North’s commitment toward denuclearization and furthermore affirms that such specification signifies complete denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. He added that such development would play the role of a strong guide toward the U.S.-North Korea summit.
South Korea held a final rehearsal on Thursday afternoon on the eve of the historical inter-Korean summit.
