S. Korean Foreign Minister Hopes Kim Commits to Denuclearization in Writing

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha has expressed hope that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will commit to denuclearization in writing.

Ahead of the historic summit between President Moon Jae-in and Kim, Kang said during an interview with CNN on Thursday that if South Korea can get the North Korean leader's commitment to denuclearization in writing, that would be a very solid outcome.

When asked what would constitute success for President Moon Jae-in's summit with Kim, Kang suggested a joint statement of understanding on a broad set of issues including denuclearization, peace and relations between the two countries.

The minister also said that it would be "unrealistic" to expect sudden movement toward a formal peace treaty between the two sides, stressing the need to create the reality of peace by removing hostilities first.

Kang also gave credit to U.S. President Donald Trump for opening the door for dialogue with North Korean and realizing the inter-Korean summit.

She added that Moon and Trump have had different messages at times, but they have the common understanding that North Korea will never be accepted as a nuclear power.
