Kim Jong-un Crosses Military Demarcation Line

Kim Jong-un has become the first North Korean leader to step onto South Korean territory.

At around 9:30 a.m., he crossed the Military Demarcation Line(MDL) where he was greeted by President Moon Jae-in for a historic summit.

The pair shook hands with warm smiles and Kim invited Moon to cross over onto the North's side of the MDL. Moon took Kim's hand and stepped over before the pair crossed back to the South's side together.

They then followed a procession of traditional Korean musicians before receiving a South Korean military guard of honor, another first for a North Korean leader.

Moon and Kim then greeted each other's entourages which include the North's nominal head of state Kim Yong-nam and four key officials of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, including Kim’s younger sister, Kim Yo-jong. Members of the South's delegation include Presidential Chief of Staff Im Jong-seok, National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong, National Intelligence Service Director Suh Hoon and Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha.

They entered the Peace House around 9:42 a.m. where Kim signed the guest book. He wrote "New history from now, at the starting point of history of a new age of peace." They then took a photo in front of a large painting of Mount Bukhan, which stands on the northern periphery of Seoul.

This is the third summit between the two Koreas, but the previous two meetings, in 2000 and 2007, were held in Pyongyang.

Moon and Kim are set to begin their summit at 10:30 a.m.
