Report: The U.S., China, Japan and Russia have expressed their hopes that Friday’s inter-Korean summit will be a success and help resolve the North Korean nuclear issue.

As the historic summit got under way, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement that the U.S. hopes the talks will lead to peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.

The U.S. is pushing for the complete denuclearization of North Korea, and will look to make progress on this goal at the proposed meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un set for late May or early June.

Japan is seeking the same goal. Tokyo’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said in a news briefing Friday that he hopes the summit will involve positive discussions on seeking comprehensive resolutions to the North’s nuclear and missile programs.

China also expressed its wishes for the success of the talks. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Thursday that Beijing hopes the summit will lead toward the resolution of Korean Peninsula issues.

Also on Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said during a regular news briefing that Moscow fully supports the two Koreas' diplomatic efforts.

Zakharova added that Moscow is making every effort to contribute to a peaceful resolution of the Korean Peninsula issues.

Russia and China proposed a diplomatic roadmap to solve the North Korean nuclear crisis in July last year, calling for a peaceful and gradual resolution of the issue.
