DP Hails Summit as Historic, LKP Calls it a 'Show'

Political parties in South Korea have issued opposing assessments regarding the inter-Korean summit declaration the two Koreas announced on Friday.

The ruling Democratic Party as well as the Party for Democracy and Peace and the Justice Party welcomed the summit declaration as a "historic achievement."

The main opposition Liberty Korea Party meanwhile denounced the declaration over a lack of a concrete agreement on denuclearization, saying that it failed to achieve the goal of dismantling North Korea's nuclear weapons.

The minor opposition Bareunmirae Party took positive note of the phrase "complete denuclearization" stated in the joint declaration but also stressed the importance of implementation.

In a statement, Democratic Party spokeswoman Kim Hyun called the summit's outcome a historic declaration that paves a path toward the easing of inter-Korean tension and Korean unification.

She said the declaration also integrates a detailed action plan for the tasks going forward.

Meanwhile in a Facebook posting, Liberty Korea Party chairman Hong Joon-pyo blasted the summit as "a political show in the name of peace."
