Summit Declaration May Seek Parliament Consent

The presidential office is set to carry out follow-up measures to the inter-Korean summit declaration in a swift and transparent manner based on law and due procedures.
The top office issued a statement after the joint declaration was announced by the leaders of the two Koreas during their Friday summit.
The summit declaration is therefore expected to go through a process of Cabinet deliberation and the president's approval followed by parliamentary ratification and promulgation to the public.
However, the top office said that whether to seek parliament consent will be determined by a review among related agencies including the Ministry of Government Legislation.
This cautionary note stems from the concern that the inter-Korean agreement could be subject to political wrangling during the ratification process.
The presidential office will also convert its summit preparation committee into a steering committee on implementing the summit declaration.
The new committee will carry out and inspect government-wide follow-up steps to the summit results.
