Top Office: Summit Declaration Opens New Era of Peace

The presidential office has said the inter-Korean summit declaration has laid the groundwork for ending the Cold War and establishing lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Cheong Wa Dae said the joint declaration announced by President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has opened a new era of peace.

In a statement issued following the inter-Korean declaration on Friday, the top office said that by agreeing to build a permanent peace regime, the two Koreas have laid the foundation to do away with outdated hostilities and confrontation which continued for 65 years and to bring about peace, coexistence and joint prosperity.

The office said the two sides clearly affirmed "complete denuclearization" and a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula. It said this affirmation will pave the way for advancing cross-border relations and creating a virtuous cycle on the denuclearization issue.

The presidential office also noted the summit declaration will serve to earnestly begin a peace process on the peninsula and support successful summit talks between North Korea and the United States.
