Top Diplomats of S. Korea, US Discuss Summit Results

The top diplomats of South Korea and the United States have agreed to closely consult with each other for the success of the upcoming U.S.-North Korea summit.

According to the Foreign Ministry in Seoul on Sunday, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha talked over the phone with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday, in their first conversation since Pompeo was confirmed as secretary of state in the Senate on Thursday.

In the talks, the two officials discussed the results of Friday's inter-Korean summit and reaffirmed the two allies' commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The ministry said that the top diplomats agreed that the two allies should focus on diplomatic efforts to ensure that the success of the inter-Korean summit will lead to a success of the U.S.-North Korea summit.

To that end, the two sides reportedly agreed on the need for an early summit between President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Donald Trump and discussed details. They also agreed to schedule a meeting at the earliest convenience.

Calling the inter-Korean summit results very promising, Pompeo said he would closely work with Seoul to make real progress in solving the North Korean nuclear issues.
