Chinese Foreign Minister to Visit N. Korea This Week

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit North Korea this week.
China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang announced on Monday that Wang will be visiting the North on Wednesday and Thursday.
Wang is expected to hear the results of Friday’s inter-Korean summit from North Korean officials and coordinate views on denuclearization ahead of the U.S.-North Korea summit.
In particular, Wang is expected to emphasize that China must not be left out of efforts to replace the Korean War armistice with a peace treaty. During their summit, President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed to pursue a three-way meeting involving the two Koreas and the U.S., or a four-way meeting involving the two Koreas, the U.S. and China on establishing permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Also during his stay, Wang and North Korean officials are expected to hold discussions on ways to address the strain in their countries’ economic and trade relations which resulted from Beijing’s strengthened sanctions against Pyongyang.
