Koreas Move to Reduce Tension after Summit

Anchor: The two Koreas are moving quickly to diffuse tension after a historic summit on Friday. North Korea says it will close down its nuclear test site in May and adjust its time zone to match South Korea's. South Korea announced that it would remove loudspeakers used to blast propaganda along the inter-Korean border from Tuesday.

Report: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has vowed to close his country's nuclear test site in Punggye-ri next month and open the process to experts and journalists from South Korea and the United States.

Chief presidential press secretary Yoon Young-chan said in a televised statement on Sunday that Kim made the promise during his summit with President Moon Jae-in on Friday.

Yoon quoted the North Korean leader as saying that some say he is terminating facilities that are not functioning, but they are in good condition.

The North has conducted six nuclear tests at the site since 2006. Seoul and Pyongyang agreed to discuss a concrete schedule as soon as the North is ready.

South Korea, on its part, will remove loudspeakers used to broadcast anti-North Korea propaganda along the inter-Korean border from Tuesday.

It is the first follow-up measure to the “Panmunjeom Declaration” signed after Friday’s summit, in which the two Koreas agreed to cease all hostile acts against each other on land, air and sea.

In another sign that the two countries are moving to narrow their divide, the North decided on Monday to unify its time zone with South Korea’s starting May fifth.

The North created its own "Pyongyang Time" in 2015 by setting the clock 30 minutes behind the South.
