S. Korea Begins Removing Propaganda Loudspeakers

South Korea is removing loudspeakers along the inter-Korean border that were used in the past to blare anti-North Korea propaganda.

It's one of the first follow-up measures to Friday's “Panmunjeom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula” signed after a summit between President Moon Jae-in and North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un.

South Korean oropaganda loudspeaker broadcasts across the Military Demarcation Line(MDL) were halted last Monday ahead of the summit.

In the declaration, the two Koreas agreed to cease all hostile acts against each other on land, air and sea. This included halting loudspeaker broadcasts and the distribution of leaflets around the MDL by May first. Regarding the leaflets, the ministry said the government hasn't distributed leaflets since 2010.

The ministry stressed that it is hoping that the North’s military will respond to the latest move. Given that the North mostly operates propaganda loudspeakers that are fixed onto the ground, withdrawing the equipment is expected to take more time than the South.

Currently, the South has around 40 propaganda loudspeakers, including fixed and mobile.
