N. Korea Appears to Have Begun Steps to Shut Down Key Nuclear Test Site

South Korean and U.S. military and intelligence authorities have detected signs that North Korea has begun taking steps to close down its Punggye-ri nuclear test site and reveal the procedure to the world.

A government intelligence source said Thursday that authorities have observed never before seen signs from Tunnel Number 3 of the Punggye-ri site.

The source said the signs are highly likely to be related to the North’s steps to fulfill an agreement reached during last week’s inter-Korean summit to disclose the shutdown of the site to the outside world.

South Korean and U.S. military authorities had assessed that Tunnel Number 3 located at the southern part of the site is technically equipped to carry out a nuclear test at any time.

Another source said cables from Tunnel 3 have been removed and personnel and equipment are being spotted at the tunnel’s entrance.

The source said it is closely watching the movements though it cannot disclose details given that it’s an intelligence matter.
