Moon, Xi Agree on Close Cooperation to End Korean War

President Moon Jae-in and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to closely communicate and actively cooperate with each other in ending the Korean War and turning an armistice into a peace treaty.

Presidential spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said in a briefing on Friday that the two leaders reached the agreement as they spoke by phone for 35 minutes from 5 p.m.

The spokesman said Moon stressed Xi’s continuing interest and support is needed in the process of achieving complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and bringing permanent peace to the region, including during the upcoming U.S.-North Korea summit.

Xi congratulated Moon on the success of the inter-Korean summit and proposed that Seoul and Beijing continue close bilateral communication, and maintain and strengthen their coordination.

It is the first time Moon and Xi spoke to each other after the landmark summit between Moon and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un last Friday.
