Following a recent détente on the Korean Peninsula, North Korea’s propaganda is softening in tone, emphasizing unification and peace over anti-Americanism. 

According to the New York Times on Wednesday, the North’s propaganda apparatus Uriminzokkiri, tweeted a poster on Sunday emphasizing the Panmunjeom Declaration signed during the inter-Korean summit in April. 

The poster shows two men, reminiscent of President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, holding up the documents entitled April 27th Declaration against the backdrop of the unification flag. Its slogan read, “The whole Korean nation should firmly consolidate under the flag of national independence and build a strong, prosperous, unified nation!” 

Two days later, the agency posted another poster in which two bulldozers carrying banners reading “independent reunification” and “coprosperity” are demolishing the heavily armed inter-Korean border. The bulldozers are also removing a missile bearing the words “joint military drills to invade the North.”
