US Officials in N. Korea to Bring War Remains Home

U.S. officials are reportedly visiting North Korea to bring home the remains of more than 200 American service members who died in the Korean War.

A Seoul official said on Friday that officials from the Pentagon and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency appear to be visiting North Korea, adding officials from the U.S. Forces Korea(USFK) were not included in the delegation.

The North's transfer of the remains could begin as early as Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday quoted a U.S. official as saying that the North Korean government is expected to transfer the remains of more than 250 service members to the U.S. within the next day or two.

The report said that the remains would likely be brought to Osan, a U.S. military air base south of Seoul, where they would be repatriated in a tarmac ceremony with USFK Commander Vincent Brooks. The remains will then be sent to Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii for identification.

The transfer comes in line with a joint statement between President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un following their summit in Singapore last week.
