Pro-N. Korea Newspaper Stresses Improvement in N. Korea-US Ties

A pro-North Korea newspaper based in Japan says that a unilateral demand for nuclear dismantlement of North Korea will not work, stressing the importance of a "fundamental improvement" in North Korea-U.S. relations.

Referring to Washington's recent pullout from the Iran nuclear deal, Choson Sinbo said on Friday that Pyongyang can't be indifferent to the U.S. move as North Korea-U.S. dialogue is under way.

The paper said the North and the U.S. signed the Geneva Agreed Framework in 1994 but argued it was unilaterally scrapped by the Bush administration later on.

It said North Korea did not possess nuclear deterrence at that time but the situation is completely different now, emphasizing that the joint statement issued after the U.S.-North Korea summit in Singapore declared the two sides will improve bilateral ties.
