Two Koreas Discussed Reconnecting Military Hotlines

South and North Korea held working-level military talks on Monday on reconnecting the East Sea and Yellow Sea district military communication lines.
The meeting was held for around one hour from 10 a.m. at the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine office in Paju, just south of the inter-Korean border, to follow up on an agreement made at general-grade negotiations last week.
South Korea sent a delegation led by Army Colonel Cho Yong-geun for talks with a North Korean group led by Colonel Om Chang-nam.
In February 2016, North Korea shut down a military communication line around the western coast of the peninsula to protest South Korea’s decision to shut down the Gaeseong Industrial Complex. The line was partially restored in January following high-level inter-Korean talks.
Another military communication line on the east coast remains unused since it was blocked after a forest fire on the northern side of the Military Demarcation Line in November 2010.
