Expectation Grows for Resuming Inter-Korean Historical Research

As South and North Korea increase their contacts for bilateral cooperation, the possibility of resuming an inter-Korean historical research project is also rising.

Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the North’s ruling Workers’ Party, said on Thursday that a discussion session was held at a college located in Gaeseong on Wednesday to assess the significance of the metal types from the ancient Goryeo kingdom that were excavated during previous joint inter-Korean research on the remains of Manwoldae in Gaeseong in 2015.

Manwoldae is a royal palace of Goryeo.

The two Koreas conducted the joint research between June and November 2015, but it has been suspended ever since inter-Korean relations began to worsen later that year.

The North holding a discussion session on the metal types and reporting on them is seen as an indication it wants to resume the work amid the warming ties between the two Koreas.
