Two Koreas Agree to Modernize Major N. Korean, Inter-Korean Roads

South and North Korea have agreed to modernize roads linking Pyongyang and Gaeseong as well as roads connecting the two Koreas across the eastern border.

During a working-level meeting at Tongilgak on the North Korean side of the truce village of Panmunjeom on Thursday, the two Koreas agreed to modernize and expand the roads between the North Korean capital and the North's western border city of Gaeseong and the roads between the South’s eastern border city of Goseong and the North’s eastern coastal city of Wonsan.

They agreed to form a joint research team to carry out the modernization projects and conduct a joint site inspection on the Gaeseong-Pyongyang sections in early August.

Regarding the scale of construction and modernization of the roads, they agreed to pursue it based on international standards, but also by respecting the conditions of the respective areas.
