Beijing Says UNSC Should Adjust N. Korea Sanctions

Beijing says the United Nations should suspend or lift its sanctions on North Korea if the regime faithfully implements the UN’s resolutions.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lu Kang relayed the Chinese government’s stance at a regular media briefing on Friday, when asked whether China and Russia submitted a draft statement calling on the UN to ease its North Korea sanctions.

He said China maintains that UN Security Council resolutions on the North should be implemented precisely and by all members.

He added, however, the Security Council's decisions stipulate it can adjust North Korea sanctions depending on Pyongyang's implementation of resolutions, with suspending or lifting of the sanctions included as possible readjustment.

The spokesperson explained that China does not see sanctions as the goal and the UNSC should support and cooperate on diplomatic dialogue and efforts for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
