S. Korean Military Puts off Reconstruction Work for Frontline Military Bases

The South Korean military has reportedly put on hold reconstruction plans for army bases located in frontline areas within ten kilometers of the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas.

A senior government official in Seoul said on Sunday that the military has put off new building plans for some 100 army units categorized as Alpha in the Forward Edge of Battle Area (FEBA).

The planned construction reportedly includes building new barracks for the army units and improving artillery positions.

The FEBA has four categories – Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta – and Alpha is the nearest to the DMZ and within the Civilian Control Line, where reconnaissance, artillery and information battalions are stationed.

The military's latest decision is considered Seoul's effort to uphold the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration in which the two Koreas agreed to carry out disarmament in a phased manner and to be ready to move frontline bases further from the border if necessary.
