Reuters: US Softens 'All or Nothing' Approach to N. Korea’s Denuclearization

The U.S. has reportedly appeared to shelve its “all or nothing” approach to North Korea’s denuclearization ahead of U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s arrival in Pyongyang Friday for nuclear talks.
Reuters said on Wednesday that U.S. officials have been trying to flesh out an agreement reached at the Washington-Pyongyang summit, but there had been no sign of a breakthrough and little progress toward even defining the keys terms of any agreement.
Washington had previously been calling for the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization(CVID) of the North.
However, following talks on Sunday between U.S. envoy Sung Kim and his North Korean counterparts to set up Pompeo’s latest Pyongyang visit, the report said the phrase CVID appears suddenly to have disappeared from the U.S. State Department’s lexicon.
The report said that this week, the department has redefined the U.S.’ goal as “the final, fully verified denuclearization" of North Korea. Reuters quoted two U.S. officials as saying that the Trump administration had stepped back from its CVID demand on South Korea’s advice.
During Pompeo’s Pyongyang trip, the secretary is set to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to flesh out a denuclearization agreement signed by Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump at their Singapore summit last month.
