Top Diplomats of S. Korea, US to Hold Meeting in New York

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha is slated to meet U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in New York on Friday.

The two diplomats will work on ways to strengthen ties between Seoul and Washington and discuss key issues, including the denuclearization of North Korea and the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula.

After the meeting, Kang and Pompeo will request international cooperation on North Korea to 15 nations of the UN Security Council by stressing the importance of Pyongyang’s complete denuclearization and the efforts put in by South Korea and the U.S. to resolve North Korean issues.

It is rare for South Korean and U.S. foreign ministers to open up a joint briefing with the members of the UN Security Council.

Pompeo, meanwhile, is predicted to lay out the current status of bilateral negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang.

He will also strongly point out the importance of keeping the international sanctions intact against North Korea until there is a tangible result from the denuclearization process.
