N. Korea Says It Test-fired New 'Tactical Guided Missiles'

North Korea said Friday that it successfully test-fired two new tactical guided missiles a day earlier.

According to the Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the North Korean ruling Workers' Party, the two tactical guided projectiles developed by the North's Academy of Defense Science "accurately hit the target" set in the water 600 kilometers off the east coast.

The report said North Korean leader Kim Jong-un did not attend the test-firing.

Ri Pyong-chol, vice chairman of the party's Central Committee, and other senior officials in charge of national defense and science research reportedly oversaw the test.

The paper said that the new weapon is based on existing technology that was improved to carry a two-point-five ton warhead.

On Thursday, South Korea's military said that the North fired what appeared to be two short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea.
