A week has passed since President Yoon Suk Yeol briefly put the country under martial law, but North Korea remains silent on the matter.

As of Tuesday morning, the North’s state-run media outlets the Rodong Sinmun and the Korean Central News Agency had not mentioned Yoon’s martial law declaration on December 3.

They have also made no mention of the impeachment motion brought against Yoon in the National Assembly or the mass protests calling for his resignation.

Additionally, there have been no reports criticizing South Korea, even though the Rodong Sinmun previously reported on South Korean rallies and statements denouncing Yoon almost daily.

North Korea’s media reacted very differently in 2016, commenting actively when an influence-peddling scandal and mass street protests led to the impeachment and eventual ouster of former President Park Geun-hye.

The silence from the North is interpreted as an effort to manage the situation without provoking South Korea and to prevent any potential unforeseen events.
