Quoss, a bidet manufacturer

#Power of Businesses l 2015-01-26

Now it’s time to take a close look at a small but competitive business making a difference for the Korean economy. This week’s spotlight is on Quoss, a bidet specialist.

Established in 2012, Quoss is a late starter in the bidet business. However, the company has taken advantage of its cutting-edge technology to present bidets that are quite different from the conventional oneso the market. Quoss Director Lee Chun-san is here to tell us more about this hottest rising player in the bidet industry.

Quoss is a company that develops, manufactures, and sells bidets and bathroom fixtures. Quoss bidets come in a variety of models, such as the automatic flushing bidet to wash the toilet seat interior automatically, Bluetooth-controlled bidets, and the one-piece bidet, which combines a toilet seat and a bidet in one. The Bluetooth-controlled bidet is particularly convenient, since your specification can be stored in your mobile phone and the bidet can be adjusted to suit your needs with your phone even after someone else has used it. Quoss was the first one to develop this type of bidet. Right now, Quoss bidets controlled by Android-based phones are already out on the market and we’re in the process of developing an application for iPhones.

The bidet originated in Europe in the 15th century and was originally used for medical purposes to treat diseases. In the 1980s, Japan’s Toto developed the first electric bidet, and by the early 1990s, the bidet was introduced to Korea. Since then, it has evolved into widely used hygienic equipment. The name Quoss came from combining the terms “ubiquitous” and “essence” to illustrate the company’s mission to be an ubiquitous and essential institution. Quoss was instrumental in making the bidet a necessity in Korean households by becoming the first in Korea to develop the system that instantly heats up water. It also ushered in the era of the Internet of things for the bidet industry by designing a model equipped with Bluetooth functions. But of course all these innovations don’t mean anything if Quoss bidets did not perform their basic functions properly.

A bidet should cleanse thoroughly. That’s the bottom line. There is a vast difference between washing with water only and bubble-washing, with water and air. The same difference can be seen in washers. Air-bubble washers can clean clothes better in a shorter span of time and these advantages are found in our bidets as well. Our bidet users especially like the fact that the cleansing force is very gentle and the water temperature is maintained at the same level for the whole cleansing cycle. Our cleansing time is set at five minutes and the water is kept warm for the entire time span, allowing enough time for a comfortable sitz bath.

An air pump allows thorough and gentle cleansing and the water temperature is kept constant even for a long time. Anyone who has used a Quoss bidet is certain to order more, as attested by a positive market response and a flood of incoming orders. Confident of its product quality and technology, Quoss has built a solid foundation to enter markets around the world.

All of our products have earned KC safety certificates and energy-saver citations. We also have Europe’s CE certification, China’s CQC certification, and the EAC from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus, as well as the FCC and the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive approvals from the United States. Also, we’ve met the ISO 9001 and 14001 standards. Our next plan is to obtain Russia’s CU certificate in February and earn the United States’ UL product certification and Canada’s CUL certification before the year is over.

Quoss has entered various markets around the world, including the U.S., Germany, Russia, and Australia, and posted an export revenue of more than one million dollars last year. Now its eyes are on pioneering new markets.

As Korea’s local spending slowed down, we turned our eyes toward China first. Given the bidet penetration rates in Korea and Japan, there is no other country that would show a faster growth in bidet usage than China. So we first obtained the CQC electric safety certification from China and took part in trade shows around China, including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Chengdu, to demonstrate why people need to use bidets and how excellent Korean-made bidets are. That’s how we won the interest of Chinese buyers and opened up new markets one by one.

Bidets made in Japan, Korea, and China account for 80% of the global bidet market. Quoss has entered the Chinese market with product quality that rivals that of Japanese bidet makers, but at half the price. China is a major bidet producing nation, but its bidet penetration rate is only in the 1% range. As a result, Quoss has seen the huge potential of the Chinese market and has taken special care to win the hearts of Chinese consumers. Another country Quoss is trying hard to open up is India.

Last November we were at a trade expo in India. The Indian government is determined to address the nation’s sanitation problems by investing 10 billion U.S. dollars to implement the “Clean India” policy, following the inauguration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Their aim is to allow all Indian households to use indoor bathrooms within five years and not to give construction approvals to buildings without bathrooms. These goals correspond exactly with our bidet business, so we are trying to expand our sales network and distribute our bidets to Indian consumers.

Quoss bidets certainly won attention at the India International Trade Fair held in New Delhi in last November. Since Indians generally use manually operated bidets, they were quite amazed by the electrically operated water pressure, nozzle positions and heated seats. Quoss also impressed the Indian market by reducing the size of its bidet to fit Indian toilet seats and meeting local customer demands. Quoss is certain to succeed in more markets with its localization strategy and innovative functions.
