2016 F/W Seoul Fashion Week Special

2016-03-29

It was that time of the year again when fashion fans gather in Seoul to get a peek into fall and winter trends. The 2016 Fall/Winter HERA Seoul Fashion Week wrapped up last Saturday, with runways filled to the brim with awe-inspiring high fashion. Our own producer Chaeryung Kwon and I were there to find out more about the nation’s biggest fashion festival—and today on our program we take you right to the scene—where fashion meets Seoul.

Sixty-eight designers, 51 catwalk shows, more than 2,000 buyers and press from across the globe—Seoul Fashion Week was indeed a big deal. Taking place for six days from March 21st to March 26th at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) and the former factory complex of Daesun Flour Mills in Mullae-dong, Seoul, this year’s Seoul Fashion Week was filled with innovation and creativity, proving to be yet another whirlwind of fashion emotions. The stunning collections on the catwalks were an endless inspiration to fashionistas, celebrities, bloggers, editors, and buyers in attendance from all around the globe.

More than 200 buyers from Korea and abroad as well as over 1,000 international and domestic members of the press visited the 2016 Fall/Winter HERA Seoul Fashion Week. The number of foreign buyers and press that visit Seoul for the event has risen steadily since 2010, and saw an even greater increase with the opening of the DDP in 2014. DDP, known best for its UFO-shaped structure, is an avant-garde, iconic landmark of the Korean design industry located in the heart of Dongdaemun—Korea’s largest wholesale and retail shopping district. When we were there, the venue was completely packed with blissed-out K-fashion enthusiasts, not to mention the thousands of press members vying for coverage. Alexandra Tsepilova, a fashion journalist from Russia, is one of them.

Twice a year, the nation's star-studded designers descend on Seoul as the city turns into a fashion frenzy. Included in the stellar line-up of participating designers this year were Korea’s top fashion moguls such as Gee Choon-hee, Chang Kwang-hyo, Park Yoon-soo and more whose works were featured at the Seoul Collection. At the “Generation Next” section—a business platform/trade show for rising designers to showcase their work to buyers—a total of 27 up-and-coming local designers wowed the audience with their novel creations.

The 2016 Fall/Winter runways were washed in vibrant colors, toned-down neutral hues, bold prints as well as interesting twists on familiar fall/winter staples. Relaxed French chic styles characterized by oversized silhouettes, longer coat and skirt lengths, long capes with high round collars, funky high-end streetwear including velvet pullovers and silk-printed shorts, and whimsical accessories such as lace necklaces and fur boots were some of the hottest looks spotted at Seoul Fashion Week.

Along with the six days of inspirational catwalk runways and trade shows, Seoul Fashion Week also offered a variety of events for the public to enjoy—attracting thousands of locals and visitors from all over the world. We asked some of fashion week’s best dressed visitors to describe Korean fashion.

For those fashion lovers out there interested in checking out what’s ahead in K-fashion, you are not going to want to miss the 2017 Spring/Summer Seoul Fashion Week set to take place in October.
