Episode #43: 14th Day Holidays
Valentine’s Day, White Day, Black Day??? What are they?
If you are dating in a Korea, holidays are marked by events. After 100 days, couples should mark this date with a special date or exchange rings. When a couple decides to get married, the man should mark the occasion with grand gestures of romance such as singing a song at a restaurant in front of others or give a gift of gold or diamonds. It's all about events in Korea. The 14th is usually the day of all these different events.

On January 14th, friends and couples are supposed to exchange diaries so they can record all the romantic dinners and events they have over the course of the year. February 14th is Valentines Day and girls are supposed to give their boyfriends chocolate. Usually they will make the chocolate at home. At the markets they will sell kits so girls can decorate and make the chocolate bars. Girls see this as an investment for the next month.

March 14th is White Day and the boys are supposed to give gifts of hard candy to the girls that gave them chocolate the previous month. They are supposed to give three times the amount that they received. So…if a girl gave a boy piece of chocolate on Valentine’s day, then the boy is supposed to give three pieces of hard candy in return. However, this is changing because girls would prefer something shiny or they want chocolate. Guys will often buy presents such as jewelry, flowers, and chocolate. Yes, being a guy in Korea can get expensive.
There are holidays for single people as well.

April 14th is Black Day and it is the day for the lonely and disenchanted. Single people who are did not give or receive chocolates for either day are supposed to sulk around, dress in black, and get together to eat white noodles topped with a black sauce to commiserate their singledom. These famous black noodles are called Ja Ja myeong.
