Radio Star

2012-04-28

Time now once again,
to dive into the world of movies.
Sometimes the stories told are too far out, or just uncomfortably real... but we just can't get enough!

Thanks for tuning in all you film buffs out there!
This is Daniel Choy's Flixology. a weekly review or preview of the big pictures.

There comes a time in life,
when you need or want a hero or a role model.

We turn to celebrities,
outstanding individuals of the past etc.

Today's feature film is Radio Star.
As the title suggests, it's about a super star, a rock star... but a wash-out.

BG MUSIC: Radio Radio - No Brain

Many times people forget to look close to home for heroes.
Although, most people, myself included, would hate to admit it,

but the simple truth is the greatest heroes you'd find in life
are the ones that are closest to you,
be it your best friend, your significant other or your parents...
sometimes even you own children!

This movie shed some light on such "King-makers."

Radio Star, a movie that was screened back in 2006, is what I'm talking about.

I cried a river watching it.

It's about a "has-been" rock star's second chance in life,
and an awakening to what he took for granted.

The rock-band No Brain makes their acting debut,
and they really do spice things up pretty well!

Before we dig deeper, let's take a songbreak with
the title song by the fictional singer in the movie played by Park Joong-hoon.

SONG BREAK: 비와 당신 - 박중훈 or No Brain

Park plays a singer who reached his prime too soon,
and never appreciated the fame he once enjoyed.

For his recklessness and disregard for anyone else, and disrespect
to the music world, he is easily blacklisted
and he is on a speedy ride down from fame.

But once he has passed his peak,
he still seems to have no idea where he stands now.

Out of work and after years passed,
his manager, played by Ahn Seong-gi is right by his side,
still looking out for him.

The best he could do for his singer after years of decline in status
was to land a radio deejaying gig at a slow, rural town in Korea.

At first he hates the idea and does a half-hearted job,
but gradually he matures and has an awakening.

All thanks to his faithful fans, the simple people of his new hometown,
and the selfless dedication of his manager.

Many interesting, light-hearted as well as deeply emotional
stories and scenes make this a great "feel-good" movie.

It gives us a chance to look back
and think about the people that helped made us who we are today.
be it teachers, parents etc.

And how easy it is for us to have taken them for granted...
when without them, we may have been less than half the person we are today.

I'm going to let you go with another great song from the OST.
