Unbowed

2012-05-19

How often do we hear these phrases
during one of those catchy movie trailers?

One man!
Taking the law into his own hands!
In a world where nothing is what it seems!

Well it all applies to today's movie.
And guess what!
It is not a sci-fi thriller nor a blow-em up action movie!

BG: Maggie M'Gill - The Doors

So, in fact, these cliche descriptions actually
justify the subjects dealt in this movie.

It's titled Unbowed, or directly translated Broken Arrow.

A man, with a strong sense of logic and justice!
Goes up against the judiciary system of Korea.

He is almost alone in a battle against
a group of people in power who refuse to
admit their faults and the flaws in the system.

Plus it is based on a real life person
and a true incident.

Ahn Sung-ki plays a professor
who insists that a math question for
the 1995 university entrance exam is wrong.

For being the only one who
refused to keep silent about this injustice,
he is fired by his university.
He then files a lawsuit against his employers
But the lawsuit is decided in favor of the university.

As the title suggests,
he is not easily discouraged.

He will beat the truth out if he has to.
He visits the apartment of the judge residing over the case
with a crossbow.
The professor claims he was there to
force the truth out of the judge.
To have him admit that he was not doing his job,
but rather covering for people he has connections with.

But of course, that particular judge
is as proud as he is self-righteous and lazy.
So he tries to confront the professor by force,
an arrow is fired by accident,
and he claims to be shot and wounded by it.

The professor is immediately arrested,
and the trials ensue.

BG: Crazy - Gnarls Barkley

Park Won-Sang plays a lawyer
who specializes in protecting the rights of laborers.
But he is now down and out, tired from all the
David VS Goliath battles he lost,
because those with influence and power get away with a lot of things.
He is constantly intoxicated, as his sense of justice
bore no fruit for too long in his career.
Struggles financially to keep the office open.
The professor's wife seeks him out to hire him,
as she sees a little bit of her husband in him.

There are clear evidences
that can prove that the professor did not shoot the judge.

But the judges side with one of their own.
And turn a blind eye to the truth.

The professor is a fighter,
even in prison, he finds a way
to utilize his talent to earn
the trust of his inmates,
and prepare to fight another round
in the courtroom by himself,
armed with the truth.

Gradually, he beats the flawed members
of the judiciary system constantly,
but they have the power to not accept the facts and defeat.

And the fight went on.
The verdict?

Based on a true story.
The Movie's distributor is currently negotiating
to extend its release
in other cities in US and Canada.

SONG BREAK: Heffy End - 서태지
