Dr. Karl Moskowitz on Social Changes during Japanese Occupation

2011-01-07

2010 marked 100 years since Japan formally annexed Korea as its colonial territory. That status remained until 1945 when Japan surrendered to the Allies. During the 35 years of Japanese occupation, social changes swept through Korea.

My guest this week is Dr. Karl Moskowitz. A specialist in Modern Korean and Japanese History, he is an Associate at the Center for Korean Studies at the University of Hawaii ? Manoa. Previously, he was a member of the Harvard University faculty, where he was Korea Editor for the Journal of Asian Studies, Chairman of the Subcommittee for Korea for the Association for Asian Studies, and Executive Director of the Korea Institute. He is also the author of “From Patron to Partner: The Development of U.S.-Korean Business and Trade Relations (Lexington Books, 1984).

During our conversation, I talk with Dr. Moskowitz about the indicators of social change that took place in Korea during the Japanese colonial period.
