US Army Chaplain Andrew Shulman

2011-02-11

Although Korea’s spiritual history includes mountain worship, Buddhism and Confucianism, Christianity has also taken firm hold here and Seoul boasts the nation’s largest Islamic mosque. A much smaller community of Jews also live in Korea, although their experiences are frequently overlooked.
My guest this week is Rabbi Andrew Shulman, a U.S. Army chaplain who counsels the 94th Military Police Battalion at the Yongsan U.S. Army Garrison here in Seoul. After serving in the U.S. and Iraq, he is currently the only Jewish military chaplain in Korea, where he lives with his wife and kids.

During our conversation, I talk with Rabbi Shulman about being a military chaplain, the U.S. military’s religious support office and Korea’s Jewish community.
