Director Cho Jung-rae of “Spirits’ Homecoming”

2016-03-15

“Spirits’ Homecoming” is the harrowing story of teenage girls who were forcibly taken from their homes and forced into sexual slavery for Japanese soldiers during World War II. The movie about their unspeakable pain and suffering infuriated and broke the heart of everyone who saw it. It was back in 2002 when filmmaker Cho Jung-rae first came to encounter former comfort women. His encounter with the women led him to make a film about their plight. But his project couldn't find any investors and had stalled for nearly 14 years before applying for a crowd funding project. The online funding effort drew more than 75,000 ordinary people to sponsor the movie. “Spirits’ Homecoming” had more than 50,000 showing already. Director Cho Jung-rae hopes for 200,000 showings, each showing representing every one of the 200,000 girls victimized by Japan’s wartime sexual slavery. He desperately wants to bring their spirits back home. He hopes that “Spirits’ Homecoming” would provide some peace and closure to both the dead and surviving victims of wartime sexual slavery.
