Countertenor Chung Siman made his Korean debut in a Korea National Opera production of “Orlando Finto Pazzo" last month. Although this is his first opera performance in Korea, countertenor Chung Siman is an up-and-coming artist in the United States. After winning several international competitions, he joined Ken Benson Artists, the renowned management agency for classical music talents. Chung Siman had long been a fan of classical music, but he didn’t start out as a classical vocalist. He had majored in violin until his high school senior year, but he met a turning point in his career when he sang a solo for his church choir. At the time countertenor was not a well-known singing voice in Korea. There was really no place for Chung Siman to take lessons, but he boldly ventured out to an unfamiliar world with the hope of finding his niche. Then he played the main character in the opera “Flight” last year to make his official and successful American debut. After a series of performances in Korea he has a new sense of duty as a countertenor. He wants to publicize the existence of countertenors to the Korean audiences and provide support to aspiring countertenors in Korea. Chung’s such efforts are certain to guide Korean music lovers to a richer world of classical music.
