Yoon Ho-seob, former Kookmin University professor and Korea’s pioneering green T-shirt designer

2016-07-12

Every Sunday at the traditional Insa-dong neighborhood you will find an older gentleman drawing pictures on white T-shirts with environmental messages. He is 73-year-old Yoon Ho-seob.

Instead of shouting out slogans or protesting outside an industrial plant, he draws environmentally conscious pictures on T-shirts and protects the environment in his own way. Some people are skeptical about how much people’s awareness can be changed just by handing out hand-painted T-shirts, but Yoon Ho-seob firmly believes in what he’s doing.

Yoon Ho-seob armed with unwavering conviction is Korea’s first green designer. When there was no curriculum on eco-friendly designs in Korea, he established the country’s first such curriculum and combined environmental concerns and design. Now that he’s retired, he’s spending his days working as an environmental activist who interacts with the public.

Yoon Ho-seop has been hosting an annual exhibition titled “Green Summer” since 2008, together with ordinary Koreans who care about the environment. Since young students started join his effort in 2013, people have begun to see the effectiveness of his environmental movement. When the younger generations grow up with correct awareness about environmental concerns, our planet would be able to regain its well-being before long.
