Sales of Korean Poetry Soar 505%

Sales of Korean poetry soared more than 500 percent this year.

According to Kyobo, the nation’s biggest bookstore, sales of literary works like novels and poems are booming domestically.

This year's 505-point-seven percent increase in poetry sales is a stark contrast from last year, when poetry sales decreased more than 22 percent.

Kyobo executives speculate this year's movie “Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet,” based on the life of renowned Korean poet Yoon Dong-ju may have sparked public interest in his poems. Revived publication of Kim So-wol’s poems also promoted poetry sales.

Sales of Korean novels also increased 46 percent this year from the previous year, mostly thanks to Korean author Han Gang’s “The Vegetarian”, which won the prestigious Man Booker International Prize.
