The U.S. government will protest an ad placed in a leading American daily, that denies the Japanese government and military's role in the sex enslavement of Asian women during World War Two.

Sixty-three Japanese lawmakers, academics and journalists had the ad placed in the Washington Post Thursday.

A U.S. civic organization said U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has had his advisers look into the ad, which he called outrageous. His office told a Korean civic organization that Cheney is upset over the ad.

The U.S. Navy is preparing to issue a statement denying the ad's claim that Washington asked Tokyo to set up official brothels for soldiers to prevent rape, calling the allegation groundless.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Lantos also said his committee will deal with a resolution denouncing Japan’s wartime sex slavery on June 26, adding it should pass with overwhelming support.
