Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso has expressed displeasure over the imminent passage of a U.S. House resolution condemning his country's role in forcing Asian women into sexual slavery during World War Two.
Aso told reporters Tuesday that the resolution is regrettable, saying that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe apologized for the matter during his visit to the U.S. in April and that the Japanese government has been consistent in its position.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki also said in a separate news conference that Abe has explained his government's position on the issue to Washington. Shiozaki, however, declined to give further comment on the resolution.
The U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee will vote June 26th on a resolution calling upon Japan to apologize for its role in sexually exploiting women during the war.
